Creating Projects

What is a Project?

How do I create a project?
︎ Tip: Upload files to Data Management first to make this process easier – how do I upload files?

  1. Navigate to the Explore page.
  2. Click on the Create dropdown button and select Project.
  3. Enter details, select Geoid and optionally add to a Project Group.
  4. Click Next and choose from files already uploaded to Data Management. These files will be copied into the Project.
  5. Confirm by clicking on Create.

Follow along to create a project in our demo below

How do I create a Layer?

  1. Navigate to the Project in Explore.
  2. Click on the project name or the ︎ icon and then Manage Project.
  3. Click on the New layer button.
  4. Enter the layer name, capture date and select the type of dataset. Click Next.
  5. Select from existing files uploaded to Data Management that match the type of dataset you just selected.
  6. Select the appropriate geo-reference option to place your data in the correct position.
  7. Click Done.
  8. The data is now processing and you will receive an email once it is complete.

What files types can be visualised?

3D files:

︎ IFC (.ifc)
︎ Pointcloud (.las .laz .e57)
︎ BIM/CAD model (.kml)
︎ OBJ (.obj .mtl .jpeg)
︎ 3D mesh (.zip)
︎ DXF (.dxf)
2D files:

︎ Images for analysis (.png .jpg .jpeg)
︎ Panoramic images (.png .jpg .jpeg)
︎ Images ︎︎︎ 3D mesh (.png .jpg .jpeg)
︎ Orthographic images (.tif .tiff)
︎ Terrain images (.tif .tiff .dem)

Why does data have to be copied into a Project?

Files stored in Data Management are the source of truth, meaning they should not be changed unless it is intentionally overrided by a newer version of the file. By copying files into a Project instead of editing directly, it allows for flexibility to revert back to the original data.

Project visualisation

What are Layers?

This term refers to anything in the 3D scene and shown in the scene tree. There are two main categories:

Layers created from uploaded files:

︎ GIS/CAD layers
  • DXF
  • IFC
  • KML
  • Ortho
  • Terrain

︎ Reality meshes
  • 3D mesh
  • OBJ
  • Point cloud

︎ Images
  • 2D images
  • Panoramas

Layers created in the scene:

︎ Annotation groups

These are groups that only contain annotations. When linked to 3D model, all the annotations’ locations will update when the model moves.

This is useful when you want to group annotations to share with certain people or to quickly select all of them when generating a Report.

︎ Layer groups

All the other types of layers (besides annotations) can be grouped together. Click on the ︎ and select Link to layer to move a layer into the group.

Where can I access visualisations?

Visualisations are hosted in the Explore page. Files must be added to a Project and created as a Layer for it to be launched in 3D.

How do I share visualisations/annotations/projects?

  1. Navigate to the Share link tab inside your project.
  2. Click on Create share link.
  3. Enter details and select content.
  4. Click on Save and copy link for default settings (i.e. using the same camera view and layer visibilities).
  5. Optionally, go to the Share settings button to customise your own settings. There you can copy the link too.

Project groups

What are Project Groups?

Project Groups are a collection of Projects. They are commonly grouped by users, companies, or locations, depending on what makes the most sense to you.

Why do I need to use Project Groups?

Grouping Projects together allows you to add the whole set to either a user, user group or a role – making permissions and access more manageable and future-proof when needing to bulk update.

How do I create a Project Group?

  1. Navigate to the Explore page.
  2. Click on the Create dropdown button and select Group.
  3. In the pop-up enter the group name and select Projects.
  4. Click on Create to complete the process.

Where are the Projects that don’t currently belong to a group?

Projects migrated from the previous version of Skand are all located in the Ungrouped Projects section in the same page under Explore.
